The Top Places You Need To Explore in Kochi After Attending WordCamp Kerala

For attendees arriving a few days early wishing to explore or those pondering over whether or not staying back is worth it, we have curated this guide to help you. From bustling city streets to beaches and places that take you back in time, this vibrant city offers a lot for those willing to explore it. 

1. Fort Kochi- Travel Back in Time

Remember how we mentioned that Kochi could take you back in time? Well, visit Fort Kochi and you will experience it.  The various architectural structure which has their roots in Portuguese, Dutch, and British are still preserved and maintained. Travelers could visit St.Francis Church, the first Portuguese church in India, where Vasco da Gama was initially buried before moving to Jerónimos Monastery, Lisbon.

There are many more places to explore, such as Indo-Portuguese Museum, the boat jetty and the fishing nets, Vasco da Gama square, Bishop’s House, Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Fort Kochi beach, and the viewpoint which is nearby, are the must-visit spots.

The largest art exhibition in India, and the biggest contemporary art festival in India, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is happening here in Kochi alongside WordCamp 2023. This is the fifth edition of the biennale and will run till April 10, 2023. There are various programs which include Art by children, Let’s Talk, Artists’ Cinemas, and so on.

3. Mattancherry – An Amalgamation of Cultures

Once you have explored Fort Kochi, the next stop is Mattancherry, located at a distance of 2km, which in the past was the go-to area for the spice trade. Now the place attracts a lot of tourists to various landmarks such as the Mattancherry Palace, Jain Temple, the Jew town, and the Synagogue are the places you should consider.

6. Beaches- Don’t Forget the Sunscreen

 There are plenty of beaches you can visit without traveling long distances. They are Puthuvype beach, Cherai beach, Kuzhuppilly Beach, and Puthenthode beach. The beaches during the evening are lively and if you stay back you can give get a good view of the sunset.

7. Marine Drive- Perfect Place for an Evening Stroll

A prime shooting location for movies, Marine drive is an apt place if you wish to sit down and take in the backwater view. The rainbow bridge is also famous and is better to visit at night as it will be illuminated and is a treat to the eyes. 8. Willingdon Island – Explore the Largest Man-made Island in India

The largest artificial island in India is a spot that you shouldn’t miss. The palace is named after Lord Willingdon, a former British Viceroy. The island houses the Naval Base of the Indian Navy, Port of Kochi, various hotels and restaurants to satisfy your taste buds, ferry rides, and so on. You can reach the island either by road or by ferry service.

9. Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary – How Many Birds Can You Spot?

13. Kerala Folklore Museum – An Exploration of Kerala Tradition

One of the best places to enrich your knowledge about Kerala tradition. The Kerala Folklore Museum is a three-storied building, with each floor focusing on different aspects. The visitors can get to know about Kathakali, and Mohiniyattam, view mural paintings, and also a performance theatre on the third floor. The visitors can also buy items from the various shops if needed.
